If you are unsure or have questions about make-up tattooing, this blog may be useful.
Many of you will be interested in some of the points of interest summarised in the following paragraphs.
Let's start with a frequently asked question.
The durability of make-up tattoos
About any make-up tattoo it is important to know that if it is made with a good quality pigment, it should not last more than 2-3 years. In the European Union, very strict rules will apply to pigments from 2022 to protect health, and pigments that meet this classification will not be able to stay in the skin for much longer due to their composition.
It is usually necessary to update the area every year or two, depending of course on what the guest wants.
No obligation to upgrade!
Correction is always necessary for make-up tattooing!
Why is that?
Make-up tattoos are a two-step process. The first step is a consultation and tattooing. Then, a month later, the corrective treatment, which you don't have to pay extra for with us, as it's included in the price of the make-up tattoo.
The pigment may not be evenly distributed in the skin after the first treatment, in which case it can be replaced.
If you would like a stronger colour or even a minimal change in shape, we can do this at the correction. For the first tattoo, we always prefer to do a lighter and more solid tattoo, because we can make more out of less, but it doesn't work the other way round.
What materials and tools are used for tattooing?
- Pigments
One of the most important things is the pigment of the make-up artist you go to. As a general rule, there are at least two important rules that must be met by the pigments you are currently using. These regulations ensure that the pigments do not contain any substances that are harmful to health and that they contain as few allergenic substances as possible. There are organic (carbon chain based) pigments and non-organic pigments (ore oxide based) pigments. In all cases, they are synthetically produced under laboratory conditions. The quality is not primarily determined by the composition but by the source, purity of the raw materials and the manufacturing process. The old saying is very true for make-up tattoo pigments: "Cheap meat is thin on the ground."
- Tattoo machine and needles
It is very important that tattoo machines and needles are only EU certified. Good quality needles are always made of special medical steel and sterilised by gamma radiation.
In some techniques, the tattoo artist uses up to 3-4 different needles.
When it comes to tattoo machines, it is important that the tattoo artist uses a high quality, vibration-free, specialised tattoo machine, because only these ensure proper ink application and minimal trauma, which the client experiences as pain.
- Anaesthetic
Anaesthetics are used during the anaesthesia pre-treatment and, if necessary, during treatment. These are usually creams or gels containing lidocaine, epinephrine.
With today's fine techniques, high-quality pigments and machines, anaesthetic products are rarely needed.
What many people are concerned about...Does make-up tattooing hurt?
A make-up tattoo is basically not painful, of course it depends on how high/low the pain threshold is for the client.
With today's machines and techniques, tattooing should not be painful.
We can of course relieve the pain with anaesthetic creams used for this purpose.
So we use an anaesthetic if necessary, we recommend a maximum of 5-6% active ingredient, because if you use more than that, it will harden the skin, the tissue, so it will be much harder for the specialist. With a fine technique, it is much more difficult to work on a hardened skin.
Is it worth getting a make-up tattoo in summer?
This question is often asked - here is our expert's answer:
Make-up tattoos can be done in all seasons, you just need the right UV protection! This is one of the most important rules, whether the tattoo is fresh or older. In all cases, we tell our guests to protect their fresh tattoos from the sun for at least 10-14 days, after which we recommend sunscreen so they can enjoy their tattoos for longer.
In summer, the timing of treatment should be planned according to whether you have a holiday planned. If there is, you should go for a direct sun or salt water soak at least 2 weeks after recovery. In this case, the tattoo should be protected!
